Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment invites applications for a faculty position in Marine Policy and Governance. We seek a social scientist working on marine issues, broadly construed, at the local, regional, national, or international level. We welcome applications from candidates with a PhD in any social science discipline, or related fields such as law.
This position will be based in the Division of Marine Science and Conservation and located at the Duke University Marine Laboratory, a vibrant intellectual community of social and natural scientist faculty, researchers, and students situated in the coastal town of Beaufort, North Carolina.
The mission of the Nicholas School is to create knowledge and leaders of consequence for a sustainable future. Our focus is on leadership in education, research, and service to understand environmental processes and their human and policy dimensions, broadly framed. We are particularly interested in individuals with new, critical insights and perspectives on human-environment interactions and how these might be improved, now and for future generations.
The successful candidate will have a highly promising or distinguished record of research, or equivalent contributions to practice, and a demonstrated record or exceptional promise of extramural funding, achievement and leadership in the field. The Duke University Marine Lab offers undergraduate and graduate level academic programs, and candidates should have experience or show potential to teach in dynamic, inter-disciplinary, small class environments. Candidates should be enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary setting that includes natural and social scientists.
The Duke University Marine Laboratory hosts a year round student population of undergraduate, masters, and PhD students. The candidate will be expected to teach and mentor students at all levels, but particularly our professional masters students who typically pursue careers in government and non-government agencies, or in the private sector.
The appointment may be made at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure track) or the level of an Assistant or Associate Professor of the Practice (renewable term appointment).
